A Brief History:
Following a failed attempt to gain affiliation with the Amalgamated Association of Iron, Steel, and Tin Workers of North America, workers at the Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation in Brackenridge, Pennsylvania, opened communications with the Steel Workers Organizing Committee (SWOC) in October 1936. SWOC began to negotiate with the company in March 1937.
These negotiations soon broke off, but a strike commencing the evening of March 25, 1937, led the next day to the establishment of Local 1196, SWOC. In 1942 Local 1196 became a founding local within District 19 of the United Steelworkers of America (USWA). Local 1196 transferred into a reorganized District 10 of the USWA in 1995, and it has remained active into the twenty-first century.
